Telus to Introduce Canadian Model of Droid Next Week (Update2)
http://www.fxfxfx.com 2010-02-15 21:29:09“We would love to have another leg to balance the iPhone” and Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry handsets, Chief Financial Officer Bob McFarlane said today in an interview. “There’s nothing like a little competitive supply to help you.”
Telus and rivals BCE Inc. and Rogers Communications Inc. have been cutting jobs and other costs to prepare for the arrival of new carriers this year. The Milestone, as the Droid is branded in Canada, costs the company less to buy than the iPhone or the BlackBerry Bold, McFarlane said.
Carriers rely on customers spending more each month on smartphones to recoup the subsidy they pay, or the difference between its cost and the resale value.
The Droid was the third most popular smartphone in the U.S. in the fourth quarter, behind the BlackBerry Curve and iPhone 3GS, according to researcher IDC.
McFarlane declined to say how much customers will pay for the Milestone or on what day it will debut.
Telus fell 18 cents to C$33.62 at 4:10 p.m. in Toronto Stock Exchange trading.
