Italian consumer confidence unexpectedly fell in January as people grew gloomier about job prospects, data released Tuesday by ISAE showed.

Consumer confidence in January fell to 111.7 from 113.7 in December, the first drop in three months, according to the state-funded think tank's monthly survey.

Expectations were for the confidence level to remain roughly stable at 113.5, according to a survey of nine economists by Dow Jones Newswires before the data was released.

The chief drag on the index came from the expectations component, reflecting darkening views of the labor market, while the current situation component actually rose, details from ISAE's survey showed.
